People who practice chikung can in general engage in the same sexual activities (including the frequency and quality)that ordinary people do without affecting their progress in chikung. However, as chikung strengthens one physical and mental powers, chikung practitioners may find a reduction in their desire for sex activities. This is offset by an improvement in the quality of each sex act. In other words, chikung helps promote the quality and pleasure of one's’s sexual life but it doesn't’t mean that chikung will make you a super sexual performer without being negatively affected. In fact, since chikung focuses on the unification of the body, mind, and spirit, it also requires the combination of love and desire in a combined mental, spiritual and physical state. This requires partners who are more communicative and can concentrate instead of “ffooling around like great lovers.
Additionally, the practice of chikung is influenced by the seasonal changes which are represented in the Chinese lunar calendar by the 24 seasonal festival periods (each about two weeks in duration). A formula indicates the optimal frequency of sex activities during each seasonal festival period based on one's age. We must be careful in this matter because we accumulate a little bit more energy in our body with each chikung practice we complete, but we lose a little chi with each sexual act. That is why we would like to find a balance between our frequency of chikung practice and our frequency of sexual activity.
If we want to improve the quality of our sexual life instead of its quantity, we must aim for the two partners involved to enter into the state of being totally unified. To do this requires the combination of the physical, mental and spiritual levels of sex as opposed to merely having pure sex. Most people's‘s sex life focuses on the physical aspect (sexual desire) which is a lower level of sex akin to what animals do and not what humans are capable of achieving. No matter how much more romantic atmosphere is created, it is not powerful enough for both sexes to enter into the state of being totally unified together. Most people's‘s sex life covers just the physical aspect of sex (sexual desire) which is a much lower level of sex.
Traditional Taoist chikung practice encouraged the sexual combination of both sexes based on the theory of yin and yang. In this way, each side will act as the power of perfection and promotion of life quality for the other as well as for themselves. This creates the highest form of metaphysical and mental levels of life which is not restricted to love affairs (physical passion) but expanded boundlessly to all aspects to reach the optimum point for everything as well as promoting our life. This is what the German philosopher Nietszche stressed about the perfection of the superman which requires a super opposite sex to emit the forces of compensation, coordinating to help the opposite sex fill with the inner energy thus developing a tremendous power as a base. In this way, the Taoist and Tibetan Buddhist type of mutual sex practice method of chikung is something like a holistic merging.
